Donald Duck Adventures : Volume 1 By Gemstone Publishing (Comic Book) |
Contents:
These "pocket-book" sized books feature long adventure stories starring the standard Disney characters, such as Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, and Uncle Scrooge. Donald Duck stars in "The Deep," a 48-page adventure that takes Donald, Daisy, and the nephews to an abandoned oil rig in a remote lagoon that may — or may not — be haunted by a monster. "Panicking Pachyderm" stars the redoubtable rodent Mickey Mouse as the recipient of an elephant that goes crazy at the sight of Mickey's face. Mickey travels to its home country to find out why, but discovers all the elephants there panic at the sight of him! Discover why in this 37-page epic. Also: a 39-page Uncle Scrooge adventure, "End of Days," in which the World's Richest Duck is transported to a future world where a digitized computer version of himself has taken over the world and has pushed Scrooge's innate ambition to the extreme. Can Scrooge save the world of tomorrow and vindicate his good name? |

|
Chicken Little (Disney's Mickey and Friends Storybook) By Margaret Snyder |
If you already have a good version of Chicken Little, or if your wee ones are easily frightened, the kids might enjoy this adaptation. Familiar Disney characters "perform" a sleightly quirky (Chip and Dale are in this, too) and just amusing play of the story. Not great literature, standard Disney illustrations, but cute. My five-year-old loves the Disney regulars and enjoys this variant of Chicken Little.

Walt Disney's Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold By Carl Barks |
Most people might smirk at the idea of "Disney Comics," but legendary cartoonist Carl Barks imbued Donald and Uncle Scrooge with life, warmth, energy, and adventure. This is great reading for even the most cynical (who will delight in the fact that Barks got away with giving substance to Disney's cookie-cutter characters for decades). But Gemstone's contract with Disney has expired, and negotiations are under way. Barks has been getting a lot of attention in recent years (particularly since his death at the age of 99 last year), and Disney may decide to bring him "back into the fold." But they would never treat the work with the respect with which Gemstone has, and which it deserves. My recommendation: snatch up anything you can find with Carl Bark's name on it before it goes out of print (which might be very soon). Enjoy it yourself, and save it for your children (or nieces and nephews) and grandchildren (or grandnieces and grandnephews). Just don't let the little whipper-snappers damage the merchandise!

Uncle Scrooge: Back to the Klondike (Gladstone Comic Album Series) By Carl Barks |
This book is one of the finest Barks' comic books ever made. The story brings you to the Klondike and the beginning of Uncle Scrooge's career and also introduces his one and only girl friend. The whole story builds around Scrooge's thrift and the lure for more riches and has a surprising ending! It is definetly a must for all people who like humor, a good story and great images.
